Coffee Grinder Won’t Start or Stops Mid-Service: Causes and Fixes

The queue is six deep, you pull the lever, and nothing happens. A grinder that dies mid-service feels like a disaster. Most of the time it is one of five faults, and three of them you can clear yourself in ten minutes.

In 30 seconds:

  • Dead on the switch? It is nearly always the supply — socket, plug fuse or the grinder’s own switch. Not the motor.
  • Humming but not turning? Something is jammed in the burrs. A small stone, a staple, or a clump of stale coffee.
  • Works, then quits mid-rush? The thermal cut-out has tripped. The motor is protecting itself and will restart once it cools.
  • Grinding but nothing coming out? The chute is blocked or the hopper gate is shut.

A commercial coffee grinder is a simple machine: a motor, two burrs and a switch. Trained baristas and service engineers agree that most in-service failures are jams, heat or supply faults rather than dead motors. That is good news, because those three cost nothing to check.

Dead, jammed or hot — which one is it? Start by naming the symptom. A grinder with no lights and no noise has a supply problem. One that hums without turning has a mechanical blockage. One that runs fine for an hour then stops has a heat problem. These three routes barely overlap, so the first thirty seconds of diagnosis save you the next thirty minutes.

Why it always happens at the worst time. Grinders fail under load. A busy Saturday means back-to-back doses, a hot motor and a hopper running low, which is exactly when a stone or a staple reaches the burrs. The fault was building for weeks. The rush just found it.

The honest summary. The biggest mistake is hitting the switch again and again when the grinder hums or has cut out. Repeated starts against a jam cook the motor windings, and a £30 nuisance turns into a workshop bill. If it will not turn, stop. Pull the plug and look.

Fault 1: the grinder is completely dead

No hum, no light, no movement. Nine times out of ten the grinder never received power.

  • Test the socket with something else you know works — a kettle or a lamp.
  • Change the plug fuse. Most commercial grinders on a 13A plug run happily on a 13A fuse, but a tired fuse can fail without looking blown.
  • Check the extension lead. Coiled leads under a counter get crushed and go open-circuit.
  • Check the grinder’s own switch. A rocker switch that has been slapped for four years eventually stops making contact.
  • On doser models, check the doser lid or hopper is seated. Some grinders have an interlock that cuts power when a part is out of place.

If the socket is live and a known-good lead makes no difference, stop there. Everything past that point means opening the casing, which is a workshop job.

Fault 2: it hums but the burrs will not turn

That hum is the motor trying to move something that will not move. Every extra second of it heats the windings, so switch off straight away.

  • Unplug the grinder. Not “switch off” — unplug it. Burrs that free themselves while your fingers are in there cause serious injuries.
  • Empty and remove the hopper. Close the gate first so you are not chasing beans across the counter.
  • Wind the top burr out. On most flat-burr grinders you turn the adjustment collar coarser until the top burr carrier lifts clear.
  • Look for the culprit. Small stones from the green coffee, staples from sack liners, a plastic scoop corner, or a hard clump of oily grounds.
  • Lift it out and check the burr edges. A chipped burr means a burr change, not a clean.
  • Reassemble, then reset your grind. Winding the collar loses your setting.

Fault 3: it stops mid-service and restarts later

This is the classic thermal cut-out. Commercial grinder motors carry an overload protector that cuts the supply when the motor gets too hot. It is a safety feature, not a failure.

The signature is easy to spot. The grinder works all morning, dies during the busiest twenty minutes, then works again after a break. Nothing else in the shop is affected.

What to do now: switch it off, leave it until the body is cool to the touch, then try again. Do not keep prodding it. Some models reset themselves, others have a small reset button on the base — check your model’s manual rather than assuming.

What causes the heat:

  • Grinding too fine for too long. A very fine setting makes the motor work far harder for each dose.
  • Blunt burrs. Worn burrs tear rather than cut, so every dose takes longer and draws more current.
  • Volume beyond the model. A 150W grinder built for a quiet counter will not survive a 300-cup day.
  • No air. Grinders boxed into a tight shelf with no gap behind them cannot shed heat.

Fault 4: it runs but no coffee comes out

The motor sounds normal and the burrs are turning, but the portafilter stays empty. The grind is being made and then getting stuck.

  • Hopper gate. The simplest fault in the shop. Someone closed it to swap beans and forgot.
  • Blocked chute. Oily beans and humid weather turn the exit into a plug. Unplug, then clear it with a chute brush or the handle of a wooden spoon.
  • Empty hopper with a bridge. Beans can arch over the throat and sit there looking full. A shake clears it.
  • Doser jam. On doser models the sweeper arm can stall in packed grounds.

Fault 5: it trips the RCD or the shop breaker

Stop using the grinder. A trip is an electrical fault to earth, and it will not fix itself.

The usual causes are moisture inside the casing after an over-enthusiastic wipe-down, a damaged lead, or a motor whose insulation is breaking down. All three need a qualified engineer. Resetting the breaker and carrying on is how a repairable grinder becomes a scrap grinder.

One thing worth ruling out first: unplug the grinder and reset the breaker. If it holds with everything else running, the grinder is the fault. If it trips again, the problem is elsewhere in the shop.

Fault 6: an on-demand grinder doses erratically

On-demand grinders run the motor for a timed burst each time you press. When the dose drifts shot to shot, the fault is usually the switch or the timer board rather than the burrs.

  • Check the portafilter microswitch. On fork-start models, a worn switch gives short or double doses.
  • Check the dose actually changes. If the display setting moves but the output does not, the board needs looking at.
  • Rule out the beans first. A near-empty hopper, a very oily roast or a big temperature swing in the shop all change flow before any electronics are at fault.

Weigh three consecutive doses on scales before you blame the grinder. If they are within a few tenths of a gram of each other, the machine is fine and the recipe needs work.

How to find the fault in 15 minutes

Work through these in order. Stop as soon as the grinder runs.

Step 1: Unplug the grinder

Pull the plug from the wall before you touch anything else. Why: burrs release without warning once a jam frees, and the switch alone is not a safe isolation.

Step 2: Prove the socket is live

Plug a kettle or lamp into the same socket. Why: it separates a supply fault from a grinder fault in ten seconds and costs nothing.

Step 3: Change the plug fuse and try a different lead

Fit a fresh fuse of the same rating and swap any extension lead for a direct connection. Why: fuses and crushed leads fail without any visible sign.

Step 4: Close the hopper gate and lift the hopper off

Empty the beans out and set the hopper aside. Why: you cannot see or reach the burr chamber with the hopper in place.

Step 5: Wind the burrs coarse and inspect the chamber

Turn the adjustment collar to its coarsest setting, lift the top burr carrier and look for stones, staples or packed grounds. Why: a jam is the single most common cause of a humming grinder.

Step 6: Feel the body for heat before you retry

If the casing is warm, leave it until it is cool to the touch, then plug in and run it empty for a few seconds. Why: a tripped thermal cut-out will not reset while the motor is still hot.

If the grinder still will not run after step 6, the fault is inside the casing. That is where do-it-yourself ends.

Spares worth keeping behind the counter

  • Spare 13A plug fuses. Pennies, and they turn a dead grinder into a two-minute fix.
  • A spare kettle lead or power lead of the right type for your model.
  • A stiff chute brush and a soft brush for the burr chamber.
  • A set of replacement burrs if you grind more than about 5kg a week. Waiting until they are blunt costs you a fortnight of bad coffee.
  • The model’s manual, kept where the staff can find it rather than in a drawer at home.

Five mistakes that turn a small fault into a big bill

  1. Repeatedly hitting the switch on a humming grinder. Each attempt heats the windings further.
  2. Poking the chute with the power on. This is how people lose fingertips.
  3. Ignoring cut-outs. A grinder that trips its thermal protection daily is telling you it is too small for the shop.
  4. Hosing or soaking the casing. Water inside the housing causes the RCD trips described above.
  5. Running blunt burrs for another six months. Worn burrs cook the motor, wreck the shots and cost more in wasted coffee than the burrs do.

Should you repair it or replace it?

Repair almost always wins on a good grinder with a single fault. Burrs, switches and leads are routine parts, and a well-built commercial grinder outlasts several machines around it.

Replacement makes more sense in two cases. The first is a grinder that keeps cutting out because it was never rated for your volume. The second is an old machine facing a motor or board replacement, where the repair approaches the price of a current model.
