Coffee Grinders for Coffee Shops: Specs & Buyer’s Guide (UK)

Coffee grinders buying guide for coffee shops

Last updated: July 2026

In 30 seconds:

  • The grinder matters as much as the machine — a great machine with a bad grind makes bad coffee.
  • Pick the type: on-demand (grinds fresh per shot), doser (grinds a batch into a chamber), or manual (cheapest, slowest).
  • Bigger burrs grind faster and cooler. 64–65mm for a busy shop; 50–58mm is fine for lower volume.
  • Match the grinder to the machine — a 2-group machine needs a grinder that keeps up with the queue.
  • Prices start from £349 (manual) and rise with burr size, speed and build.

Replacing a worn grinder, or buying your first? The right one comes down to four things: grind freshness, burr size, speed, and how quiet it is on your counter. The specs below give you all four for every model.

The honest summary

The common mistake is pairing a fast 2-group machine with a slow, small-burr grinder. The barista waits on the grind and the queue backs up. Buy the burr size and speed your busiest hour needs — not your quietest.

Grinder words, in plain English

Grinders come with a few bits of jargon. Here’s all of it, in one place:

  • On-demand: grinds a fresh dose for each drink, straight into the coffee handle. Freshest, least waste — the usual choice for a shop.
  • Doser (also called automatic): grinds a batch of beans into a small chamber, and you pull set doses from it. Fast when you’re slammed, but the coffee ages a little in the chamber.
  • Manual: the cheapest, simplest grinder. Slower to use — fine as a backup or for a quiet counter.
  • Burr: the two discs that crush the beans. Bigger burrs (64–65mm) grind faster and cooler, so the coffee stays consistent when you’re busy.
  • Hopper: the bean container on top. A bigger hopper means fewer top-ups through the day.
  • Shot time: how many seconds it takes to grind one espresso — lower is faster, which matters at the morning rush.

How to choose in four quick steps

1. On-demand, doser or manual?

On-demand grinds a fresh dose straight into the portafilter each shot — freshest cup, least waste, the standard for specialty coffee. A doser grinds a batch into a chamber: fast in a rush, but ground coffee ages in the chamber. Manual is the cheapest way in and the slowest.

2. Burr size sets your speed and consistency

Bigger flat burrs cut faster and run cooler, so the grind stays consistent through a rush. A 64–65mm burr suits a busy shop; a 50–58mm burr is fine for low to medium volume. The burr size is in every spec block below.

3. Match it to your machine and volume

A 1-group machine is happy with a compact grinder. A busy 2 or 3-group needs a fast on-demand grinder or a high-volume doser, so the grind never holds up the bar.

4. Mind the noise on an open counter

On a counter near customers, grinder noise matters all day. The Iconic Tron is built for low noise (45db); the Luxo and Luxomatic run at 55db. Lower db means quieter.

Reading the spec lines below

Burr is the grinding disc size (bigger = faster, cooler). Shot time is the seconds to grind one espresso dose on the on-demand models (lower is faster). Hopper is how many beans it holds before a refill. All figures are Fracino’s own; prices are “from” and were live when written.

The category also lists ground-coffee and chocolate dispensers (from £177) for serving pre-ground or instant, and the Roastilino 250g counter-top roaster (from £1,699) if you want to roast your own beans in-house. They’re not grinders, but they sit alongside them.

Money: the offer, and what we won’t do

When you buy a coffee machine, the usual deal is around £50 off a quality grinder — the Mazzer or similar. That’s the grinder offer, and it stands in place of bundle pricing rather than on top of it. We don’t stack discounts on high-value coffee setups.

Frequently asked questions

On-demand or doser grinder for a coffee shop?
On-demand grinds a fresh dose per shot, so the cup is fresher with less waste. A doser grinds a batch into a chamber — faster in a flat-out rush, but the coffee ages in the chamber. Most shops are best with on-demand.

What grinder should I pair with a 2-group machine?
A fast on-demand grinder with a big burr, like the Fracino F6 On Demand (65mm) or the Kenia-tron. It keeps up with a busy two-group bar without holding up the grind.

Does burr size really matter?
Yes. Bigger flat burrs (64–65mm) grind faster and run cooler, so the grind stays consistent through a rush. A 50–58mm burr is fine for lower-volume shops.

Which is the quietest coffee grinder you sell?
The Iconic Tron Silent at 45db. The Luxo and Luxomatic at 55db are the next step up and still low-noise — a good choice when the grinder sits near customers.

Do I need a separate grinder with my espresso machine?
Yes. Commercial espresso machines don’t grind, and pre-ground coffee goes stale fast. A matched grinder is part of the setup, not an extra.

How much should I spend on a grinder?
From £349 for a manual, but most shops are best served by an on-demand grinder in the £450–£900 band, matched to the machine and the volume.

Will any grinder work with my Fracino machine?
Most quality grinders will, but the Fracino F-series pairs cleanly and keeps spares and servicing in one family. Match the burr size and speed to your busiest hour.

Can I get the grinder cheaper if I buy it with a machine?
Usually around £50 off a quality grinder with a machine purchase. It’s that offer or a leasing plan on the full package, not both stacked together.
