Coffee Machine Won’t Turn On: Power, Fuse and Reset Checks

A commercial coffee machine that won’t turn on is usually not broken. Nine times out of ten it is a supply problem, a safety cut-out doing its job, or a boiler time-out that clears with a switch off and on.

Working through the supply first — socket, fuse, isolator, then water level — is the accepted first step for any commercial espresso machine that shows no signs of life. Most no-power faults cost nothing to fix. The ones that don’t are engineer jobs, and on a Fracino that means a back-to-base repair of roughly £210 for the round trip.

In 30 seconds:

  • Only 13A machines (most 1-group models) have a plug fuse you can change. 20A and 30A machines are hard-wired — the fuse is the breaker in your consumer unit.
  • Tank-fed machines cut out on purpose when the tank runs low. Refill, switch off, wait 5 seconds, switch back on.
  • A boiler time-out can stop the machine part-way through filling. Switching off and on again resets it.
  • “On but not heating” is a different fault from “completely dead” — check which one you have before you touch anything.
  • If the steam gauge reads above 1.5 Bar, stop. Isolate the machine and call an engineer.

Why the supply comes first. A coffee machine is the biggest single load in most small cafés. A 2-group pulls 4kW at 20A. That is enough to trip an RCD when something else on the same circuit faults.

Why the machine cuts itself out. The electronics protect the element and the pump. Running dry damages both, so the machine would rather stop than cook itself.

The honest summary. The biggest mistake is assuming a dead machine means a dead machine. Owners call an engineer, pay for collection, and find out the plug fuse had gone or the tank was empty. Spend two minutes on the checks below first.

First: is it dead, or just not heating?

These are two different faults and they lead to different checks. Look at the machine before you do anything else.

  • Completely dead — no lights, no pump noise, no display. This is a supply fault. Go to the socket and fuse checks.
  • Lights on, nothing heats — the machine has power but the boiler is cold after 20 minutes. This is a water, element or time-out fault.
  • Lights on, then cuts out — the machine runs briefly then stops. Usually low water on a tank-fed model.

Check 1: the socket, plug and fuse (13A machines)

Only lower-powered machines plug into a normal 13A socket. On those, the plug fuse is the first thing to check and the easiest thing to fix.

What runs at 13A:

  • Piccino — 2.2kW, 13A
  • Cherub and Classico — 2.85kW, 13A
  • Little Gem, Velocino VC1, Bambino BAM1E — 2.7kW, 13A
  • Contempo CON1 — 2.7kW, 13A

What to do. Test the socket with something small, like a kettle or a lamp. If the socket is dead, the problem is the circuit, not the machine.

If the socket is live, swap the fuse in the plug for a new 13A one. Fuses fail with age and with the surge of a cold start.

Don’t use an extension lead. A 2.85kW machine on a coiled extension is a fire risk and a nuisance-tripping risk. The machine wants its own socket.

Check 2: hard-wired machines have no plug fuse

This catches people out constantly. Larger machines are wired to a dedicated isolator, not plugged into a socket. There is no fuse to change.

What is hard-wired:

  • 2-group machines — 4kW, 20A (Contempo CON2, Romano FR2E-R, Bambino, Velocino VC2)
  • 3-group machines — 7.5kW, 30A
  • 4-group machines — 7.5kW at 30A, or three-phase 415V

What to do. Find the isolator switch on the wall near the machine and check it is on. Cleaners knock these off overnight more often than you would think.

Then check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD. Reset it once. If it trips again straight away, stop and get an electrician — a breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something.

Check 3: the machine’s own on/off switch

Obvious, and worth two seconds. Most machines have a rotary or rocker switch that can sit between positions.

Turn it fully off, wait five seconds, then turn it fully on. Listen for the pump. If you hear the pump but see no lights, you have a lamp fault, not a power fault — the machine is running.

Check 4: low water on tank-fed machines

Tank-fed machines stop themselves when the tank gets low. This is deliberate — running the pump dry damages it.

Tank-fed models: Cherub, Classico, Little Gem, Heavenly and Piccino. Each carries a 3L tank.

Plumb-in models: Bambino, Velocino, Contempo and Romano. On these, check the mains water isolator valve under the counter instead — a closed valve looks exactly like a dead machine once the boiler empties.

The Little Gem sequence. When the water reaches the middle of the sight glass, the amber light goes out and the machine cuts out. Refill the tank, switch off, wait 5 seconds, then switch back on. It will resume filling.

Check 5: the boiler time-out

Fracino machines have a time-out in the electronics that protects the pump and element. It is set to either 120 or 240 seconds.

If the boiler is filling slowly, the time-out can stop it before the boiler is full. The machine then sits there looking broken.

The fix is free. Switch the machine off, then back on. Filling restarts and runs until the water reaches the probe. The amber or blue light goes out and the red heating light comes on.

If it times out repeatedly, the incoming water pressure or the filter is the real problem. A clogged softener starves the boiler.

Check 6: power is on but nothing heats

Give it time before you panic. A commercial machine takes around 15 minutes to warm up from cold.

If there is still no heat after 20 minutes, and the boiler has water in it, the element or its thermostat has likely failed. That is an engineer job.

The two-minute first-checks routine

Run these in order before you call anyone. Most faults stop here.

  1. Test the socket or the isolator. Plug something else in, or check the wall isolator is switched on.
  2. Check the consumer unit. Look for a tripped breaker or RCD and reset it once.
  3. Change the plug fuse. Only on 13A machines. Fit a new 13A fuse.
  4. Check the water. Refill the tank on tank-fed models, or open the mains isolator valve on plumb-in models.
  5. Cycle the power. Switch off, wait 5 seconds, switch back on to clear a boiler time-out.
  6. Wait 15 minutes. Let it warm up properly before deciding it is dead.

What you can fix, and what you shouldn’t touch

Fair game for the owner: plug fuses, tank refills, water isolator valves, filters and softeners, and switching the power off and on.

Leave alone: high-limit thermostats, pressure switches, safety valves and any internal wiring. Tampering with these can cause serious injury and will void the warranty.

The full factory reset is not a first-line fix. It is a trained-engineer procedure, and it wipes your programmed drink volumes. Don’t reach for it because the machine won’t start.

Before replacing any part, isolate the machine from the mains electricity and water, let it cool for at least an hour, and de-pressurise it by opening the steam valves.

When it becomes a warranty or engineer job

Be clear about how Fracino warranty works before you book anything, because it shapes what a repair costs you.

Warranty is back-to-base. There are no engineer site visits for small and medium machines such as the Cherub, Bambino and Little Gem. The machine goes to the workshop.

Can I change the plug fuse myself?

Yes. Replacing a 13A plug fuse is owner-level maintenance and does not affect your warranty. Unplug the machine first and fit a correctly rated 13A fuse, never a higher one. If the new fuse blows immediately, stop there — something inside is drawing too much current and needs an engineer.

How long should a commercial coffee machine take to heat up?

Around 15 minutes from cold to working pressure. Leave the filter holders in the groups while it warms so they come up to temperature too. A machine that reaches pressure much faster than this, or reads above 1.5 Bar on the steam gauge, should be isolated and inspected rather than used.

Does a machine that won’t turn on count as a warranty repair?

Only if the fault is inside the machine. A blown plug fuse, a tripped breaker or an empty tank is not a warranty claim.
